When eBay Throws Lemons – Make Lemonade
What to do about the ban on digitally delivered items
This
announcement, or non-announcement, came as quite a shock for everyone, I don’t
believe anyone saw it coming, or at least coming so quickly. But it did
and we can complain, pull our listings off eBay and give up the money that eBay
sales have generated or look at it like the greatest marketing opportunity
in a long time.
As for
me, I’ll start squeezing those lemons and make something sweet, namely
money. A lot of extra time, a lot of extra effort has to be spent,
but huge long-term benefits will be the result of this, the most recent eBay,
change.
I’ve
read a lot of blog entries and of course the eBay forums. The eBay forums
continue to focus mostly on the negative aspects. The blogs are pretty
mixed, but as the day went on, the comments were definitely working towards a
solution. John Thornhill’s blog was hopping all day mostly with problem
solving and less whining. Those of you who have been selling for any time,
know who John Thornhill is, for those of you who don’t, you need to know, visit

It’s
pretty much a given that the dedicated, honest, hard working sellers will
continue to sell, look at this as an opportunity gained and not one lost and
will be even more successful than in the past.
Another
fact is that eBay is a mighty force and a terrific lead generator, bar none.
The targeted traffic that is gained from eBay is probably the best and fastest
of any other internet ‘traffic routes’.
My plan
is not etched in stone yet, but well on the path to continuing success and more
targeted traffic to my web site. I’ll make adjustments as I go and as I
determine what works best. A rough draft of my plan is as follows:
I.
I reduced my prices, as much as eBay would allow, all of my eBook prices.
Those that I couldn’t reduce, I scheduled a sale. Let’s face it, as many
leads as possible before March 31 is the goal for the next few days.
II.
I posted a notice and made a special announcement page stating that all digital
delivery items will end effective March 31.
III.
Included in the notice I also informed my eBay visitors that everything offered
right now and everything new that is listed will be available on CD. Here
is where the work really starts to come in. As this is really testing new
waters, it will be a wait and see sort of game, but my plan at first is to burn
the CDs as they are ordered. I’ve already started printing my business
name and more important, my website on the CDs. I did do a very minimum
amount of research into CD duplication service (to be outsourced) and for right
now, I can get Lite Scribe CDs and print directly onto them, eliminating the
need for paper labels, ink, stampers, etc for less than the price to outsource
(I’m sure there are others and I’ll do more research in the future). Okay,
so you burn a CD when one sells, but wait you can get more than one eBook or one
Software collection on a CD right? Combined shipping, up to 5, 6, 10 books
shipped for the price of one, all on one CD/DVD. You still include your
affiliate recommendations and upsell offers (bonuses) on the CD. So, now
you’ve got multiple sales and a higher selling price because physical products
always sell for more than digital products. As soon as the customer
completes their order through PayPal, you get notice of confirmed payment, and
“boom” your automated email sends out the thanks for your purchase note.
But in that email is an unadvertised bonus – You got it! The download
link, so they can start reading, using, studying right away while they are
waiting for the CD to arrive in the mail.
IV.
If you’re lucky enough to have your own web store or website, now is the time to
let every one of your customers know that everything that is available on eBay
on a CD is also available on your website as a digital download, usually for a
lower price because it is digitally delivered. (If you don’t have your own
web site yet, I have a great package with almost 300 digitally delivered
products included, ready to install and start selling on Auto Pilot),

V.
Another way I intend to drive targeted traffic to my web store is from my “About
Me” page on eBay. From here you can link to your website. I’m sure there
will be a lot of “checking and turning in anything illegal listed, but I’ll work
out these details on the fly.
VI.
If you have quality products, great customer service, a customer will more than
likely come back to you. As they now know you still do digital delivery,
remember the first email with the link, they know they can get the products from
your web store.
VII.
Always send a followup email to any customer the next day, another upsell
opportunity.
VIII. Always,
Always include your opt in page in any correspondence.
“The money’s in the list”. Right now I either am getting no less than one
sign up a day from eBay visitors from my emails or from my About Me page.
Don’t ever pass up on the opportunity to get any customer or even potential
customer to sign up for your list.
This is
only a start, the ‘wheels have been turning overtime’ since finding out about
this change last night when listing (or trying) to list a new item.
As far
as the classified listings, there are definitely potentials there, but I haven’t
really thought it through completely or researched it, and probably won’t until
after the change has taken effect. I’m not really sure how many people
even look at the classifieds, so I don’t feel knowledgeable enough about it at
this point to venture into that arena. I do know that no one will be
listing every item in classified format at $9.95 a month, that’s just not quite
feasible and a little far fetched for even the biggest powersellers. This
is definitely something I will be researching and if it seems like a good
direction, I will shoot off another report about it.
For
now, I think the direction is in CD/DVD format. Keep your presence on
eBay, let your customers know you are still there. eBay, for all its
negatives, is still a great marketing opportunity and in comparison with so many
others, it is still a very reasonable advertising/marketing option in the long
run.
And
something that just came to mind, another positive, but not for the eBay seller
or the eBay buyer, is the US Postal Service, wow! And the rates are going
up again real soon, won’t they love it!
Stand
tough and go towards your dream! This may possibly be the jumpstart needed
to not only boost sales, but also skyrocket them.

have a personal account, but in order to sell digital material, you must have a
Premier or Business Account and have that account verified. It’s easy to
do and doesn’t take that long, a few days at the most from start to finish.
Next you need some type of auction management program.
You can use Turbo Lister on eBay for free or selling manager for a (quite hefty)
fee. Some sellers prefer selling manager, but personally I used it for
quite a while, it works wonderfully, but became too pricey.
If you plan to use pictures in your listings, you will need
an image host. eBay offers picture management, but personally their fees
are rather high. I have tried many, scrapped most, and am 100% completely
satisfied with the quality of products and ease of use and most of all
